These bended wood chairs; based upon the Thonet chair #18 design from 1876, were originally made in Austria. Steam-bending wood was one of the first industrial wood furniture manufacturing processes. Bending wood into curved and graceful shapes allowed manufactures to make strong but lightweight furniture. Restored using aircraft technics, the aluminum is curved and shaped to fit in the seat of the Thonet chair. Riveted lines between panels match holes originally used to fix the wicker seat.
